The Framework
What changes when your presence helps determine what happens next?
Hyper Immersive Reality (HIR) is an original framework I have developed for an artistic medium in which our bodies, choices, and surroundings participate in an unfolding world. It considers how artists can compose experiences that give people a meaningful role in what becomes possible.
The framework brings four conditions together:
- Operational agency: your participation changes how the experience unfolds.
- Multimodal embodiment: your body has a functional role in the experience.
- Hybrid spatiality: actual places and objects become part of a fictional or digital world.
- Responsive mediation: the experience answers your participation while it can still affect the encounter.
Imagine carrying a lantern towards a doorway. A projected boat follows your light. Moments later, a performer enters through that doorway: “I saw your light,” she says. Your physical gesture has shaped a fictional journey and brought a shared encounter into being.
HIR examines the relationships that make such moments possible. Drawing on theatre, installation art, games, and embodied perception, it offers a way to design and question experiences where participation matters. AI and spatial technologies can extend these possibilities; human attention can also bring them to life.
The research asks what authorship becomes when others help realise a work—and what responsibilities follow when that work can notice, interpret, and remember them.
