HYPER IMMERSIVITY

HYPER IMMERSIVITY

In this report, I will discuss what I define as Hyper Immersivity or HI, a new term that I have coined to describe a significant evolution in the domain of the immersive arts, leveraging technology to create unprecedented levels of participant involvement and sensory engagement.

Characterised by participant agency, multimodality, hybrid reality, and technological mediation, HI offers a novel framework wherein the lines between the real and the virtual, the observer and the participant, become increasingly blurred. This work explores the emergence and characteristics of HI, drawing on examples like Punchdrunk’s immersive theatre (Punchdrunk, 2023), Dreamscape Immersive's Virtual Reality adventures (Dreamscape Immersive, n.d. – a), Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's interactive urban installations ‘Pulse Park’ (Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, 2008), and teamLab's dynamic digital art (teamLab, n.d. - a), among others, to illustrate the breadth and potential of these experiences. I delve into the theoretical implications for artists, participants, and the nature of artistic engagement, highlighting the shift towards collaborative, participatory art forms that challenge traditional conceptions of authorship and experience.

Furthermore, I address the potential for cross-disciplinary research in enhancing HI and the ethical considerations that accompany the increased use of personal data and the impact of deeply immersive experiences on individuals. The work argues for the importance of accessibility and addressing socio-economic disparities in the design of HI, ensuring that these transformative experiences are available to diverse audiences. As HI continues to evolve, it prompts a re-evaluation of the role of technology in art, the dynamics of participant engagement, and the ethical frameworks necessary to guide their development.

Future research directions are identified, emphasising the need for advancements in technology, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and a deeper understanding of the ethical challenges posed by HI. The paper concludes by affirming the transformative potential of HI to redefine artistic expression and engagement in the digital age, calling for sustained attention to explore their multifaceted impacts and opportunities.
